Abstract

This study aimed to develop an innovative educational program for chess based on the integration of motor and cognitive learning, with the objective of enhancing the cognitive abilities and technical skills of students at the College of Physical Education, University of Babylon. An experimental research design was employed, involving a sample of 46 male and female students who were randomly assigned to an experimental group (18 students), a control group (18 students), and a pilot group (10 students). The post-test results revealed statistically significant improvements in the experimental group in strategic thinking, working memory, and decision-making speed, as well as in performance accuracy, response speed, and visuomotor coordination. The overall performance index also increased markedly compared with that achieved through traditional teaching methods. Furthermore, a questionnaire assessing participants’ attitudes and satisfaction revealed an approval rate of 87%, reflecting the effectiveness of the proposed program and its potential to serve as a valuable addition to university curricula.
